Pitbulls are known for their intelligence and loyalty and the breed has deserved a great popularity all over the world. These dogs, if bred and trained correctly, make excellent companions, pet friends and natural guards. They are good and playful with children, making protective companions for them.
Height: 18-22 inches
Weight: 30-80 pounds
Colors: A variety of colors.
Coat: thick, short, and shiny.
Pitbulls - Pictures - Brief History
It is thought that the Pitbull, later known as APBT, developed from a cross between the original English bulldog and a smaller terrier type dog. These dogs were participants of the bloody games of bull baiting until England outlawed this sport in 1835.
The breed discussed, Pitbull Terrier, is known to be the gamest and most capable fighting dog that has ever existed. Being used primarily as fighting dogs in Staffordshire
(central England); they have gradually become known as the Stafforshire Bull Terriers. As the Civil war was ending, the dogs were sent to the United States, which a larger dog developed from the smaller English stock.
At first, the American Kennel Club (AKC) did not recognize the breed. Unlike the United Kennel Club (UKC) that registered the dog as a Pit Bull Terrier later to become the American Pit bull Terrier, the official name for the breed was the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
The breed was registered as a Staffordshire Terrier and that name was adjusted in 1972 to what we now know as the American Stafforshire Terrier. The American Staffordshire Terrier, (in short, Am Staff), is the AKC's equivalent to the UKC's American Pit bull Terriers, however, Pitbulls is how they are commonly referenced.
